James Ronald “Ronnie” Mercer, 71, of Crossett passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at the St. Francis Medical Center. He was born in Alexandria, LA on July 29, 1946, to his parents, Fred and Johnnie Mae Johnson Mercer. In 1963, he enlisted into the U.S. Navy and served honorably until his discharge in 1967. Ronnie soon met and married his best friend, Janice Holland, in Jonesboro, LA on April 27, 1973 and together made Crossett their home for the past 41 years. Ronnie was a hardworking family man who worked as a mud logger in the oil fields for nearly 36 years. He loved the outdoors and was a “no fuss” type of guy who enjoyed helping people.
His outspoken personality and sense of humor was contagious, and he never missed an opportunity to make someone laugh or smile.
Traveling in his RV, fishing, and especially duck hunting were among his many passions, but spending time with his family was most precious to him.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by one brother, Rev. Earl D. Mercer; and one sister, Gertrude Rankin.
He is survived by his wife of forty-four years, Janice Mercer of Crossett; two daughters, Dana Tucker and husband, Ron, of Hamburg, and Belinda Albritton and husband, Scott, of Sterlington, LA; one brother, Elmo Mercer and wife, Marcia, of Nashville, TN; one granddaughter, Brooke Holcomb of Sterlington, LA; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 13th at Medders Funeral Home, 1564 Hwy 52 W, Crossett with Bro. Walter Keener officiating, followed by an interment at Pinewood Memorial Park under the direction of Medders Funeral Home. Pallbearers are Andy Gill, Jerry Hanes, Billy Mize, Dan Norwood, Mike Cooper, and Sean Cooper. Honorary Pallbearers are Davis Harper, Scott Gill, Elmer Hanes, Danny Hanes, Clay Lofton and David Mercer.
Visitation will be from 6-8:00 p.m., Sunday at Medders Funeral Home.
