Mary "Betsy" Nelson Obituary

Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Nelson, 76, of Crossett, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2016, at the Ashley County Medical Center.  She was born in Louisville, KY on February 17, 1940, to her parents Benjamin and Golda Stinson.  Betsy was a member of the First United Methodist Church and worked as a Secretary for Georgia Pacific for many years.  Her numerous hobbies included reading, working crossword puzzles, cooking, playing the piano, and working out but, most of all, travelling with her family.  She was the type of person who never met a stranger and could beat anyone in a spelling contest. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Golda Smith Stinson.  She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Joe Kenneth Nelson of Crossett; two daughters, Mary Teresa Nelson and Denise Thornton and fiancé’ Danny Davis of McKinney, TX; one son, Michael Kenneth Nelson and wife Jeanie of Monroe, LA; one grandson, Johnathan Corey Thornton of McKinney, TX; one granddaughter, Amanda Neck and husband Tommy of West Monroe, LA; and three great-grandsons, Jaden, Gage, and Beckham Neck also of West Monroe, LA.

A Graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 20th at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Union County, AR with Bro. Toby Austin officiating under the direction of Medders Funeral Home of Crossett.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Roy Patterson, Jim Carter, Lester Avery, Dan Kersey, Dan Dumas, Kelley Lindsey, and Jason Barnett.

Visitation will be from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., Sunday, June 19th at Medders Funeral Home, 1564 Hwy 52 W, in North Crossett.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
