Sue Quarles Obituary

Mrs. Sue Wilber Quarles, age 80, of Crossett, passed away on August 9, 2015 at CHI St. Vincent Infirmary in Little Rock.  She was born January 22, 1935 in Dallas, Texas to Claude and Evie Wilber.  Sue graduated from Dry Creek High School as Valedictorian of her class. She then attended Northwestern State University where she majored in elementary education.  She played half-court basketball and became a synchronized swimmer and worked in the University library and cafeteria to compliment her scholarship.   In only 3 years she received her degree in 1957 and became the first member of her family to graduate from college.   In 1971, she went on to receive her Master’s Degree from Northeast Louisiana University in Remedial Reading.  Throughout her career, she taught school in Shreveport, LA, Norfolk, VA, and Fountain Hill, AR, along with 33 years in the Crossett Public School District where she eventually retired in May of 1995.  Sue was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Sorority and an active member of First Baptist Church of Crossett for almost 50 years.  She loved teaching Sunday School and helping with Awanas.  Besides volunteering in church activities, she loved to crochet, needle point, sew, draw, work in her garden and she was an avid reader.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Claude Wilber and Evie Green Wilber; and one brother, Claude Wilber, Jr.  She is survived by one son, James Quarles, III and wife Laura of Ruston, LA; one daughter, Beth Currie of Little Rock, AR; three brothers, David Wilber and wife Martha Nell of Crossett, James Wilber and wife Rachel of Denham Springs, LA, and Paul Wilber and wife Ramona of DeRidder, LA; one sister, Rosemary Cannon and husband Jimmy of Milo, AR; two grandsons, Ethan Quarles and Jake Currie; two granddaughters, Nicole Currie and Caty Currie; along with a host of nieces, nephews and loving friends.

A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 12th at First Baptist Church of Crossett, with Pastor Jamie Staley officiating followed by an interment at Ridge Cemetery near Castor, LA at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor Donald Nells officiating under the direction of Medders Funeral Home of Crossett.   Pallbearers are Larry Cannon, Jeff Cannon, Jake Currie, Ethan Quarles, Christian Kidd, Kevin McKenzie, and Kim Grigg along with Michael Nelson as an Honorary Pallbearer.

Visitation will be from 6-8:00 p.m., Tuesday evening at Medders Funeral Home, 1564 Hwy 52 W, in North Crossett.
