Sylvia Annette Hill Bates, 85, of Crossett, lost her five-year battle with cancer Wednesday, January 24, 2018. She is preceded in death by her parents, Wesley Denton Hill and Cellester Bolin Hill; one sister, Rachel LaVeda Kennedy; and two brothers, Randolph Hill and Ishmael Hill.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Richard “Dickie” Bates; two daughters, Sereta Sims and Marolyn Bates; one half-brother, Bob Broomfield; three grandchildren, Richard Sims, Katie Davis, and Cecelia Oehlerich; and three great-grandchildren, Thatcher, Kaden, and Hudson all of Crossett; along with a host of nieces and nephews.
She was a member of the 1952 Hamburg graduating class and one of the first female rural postal carriers in Crossett, a career that spanned over twenty-seven years until her retirement in 1988. She was a member of the Eastern Star for many years and a charter member of the “Pot Pourri Club”, which she helped name in the 1950’s. She loved working on all hand crafts, but quilting was her passion.
A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 28th, at Zion Methodist Church Cemetery, Ashley Rd 485, Milo, AR.
Visitation will be from 6-8:00 p.m., Saturday at Medders Funeral Home, 1564 Hwy 52 W, in North Crossett.
