Mrs. Dolores Anne Shows Philley, 89, of Crossett passed away on Friday, January 5, 2024, at the Belvedere Nursing and Rehab facility in Hot Springs, Arkansas. She was born on November 29, 1934, to her parents, Leland Leroy and Estelle Marie Corbin Shows in Oak Grove, LA where she grew up as part of a large and loving family, including her beloved grandparents, Whit “Big Daddy” and Suzie “Mama” Corbin.
Dolores married Carey Wise Philley (also of Oak Grove), on May 22, 1952. She and Carey moved several times as he worked in the paper making industry with various companies in Louisiana, Idaho, Alabama, Georgia, and Arkansas where Dolores was always active in their chosen place of worship and the school activities of her children. The friends developed along the way remained so throughout life. This knack to develop new friends wherever she went continued during her 18 month residence at the Belvedere where much of the staff grew to adore her friendly and sharp-witted nature. Another opportunity for her to nurture and guide the young ones, or just to tell funny stories. She somehow developed a passion for pink, whereas blue had always been her favorite color.
Dolores was a member of the Crossett community since May, 1971, and a member of First Baptist Church. She taught children in Sunday School for many years, as well as working part-time in the Mother’s Day Out Wee School, loving on the very young in the church. She was blessed with numerous great and supportive friends within this same church family. These bonds were especially strong with the ladies from her Sunday school class and Women on a Mission.
Dolores cherished her husband Carey, her large family, and many long and special friendships. She had an amazing memory and loved to reminisce with family and friends. She had clear standards for love of, and faith in God, and the importance of family supporting one another.
She spent many hours throughout her life playing card games and board games with family members of all ages. Many hours were spent sharing laughter and love in this way. She was also an avid reader until she lost much of her sight, and she instilled this love of reading in her children. She also loved her “Fully Leaded” Coca Cola – no compromise.
Along with Carey and her parents, she is preceded in death by two sisters, Joan Annette Shows, and Mary Sue Danner.
She is survived by one son, Carey W. "Buster" Philley Jr. (Kim) of Baton Rouge, LA; two daughters, Cynthia Philley of Crossett, and Renita Philley-Hale of Hot Springs, AR; two brothers, Leland Wade Shows (Mary) of Clarkston, WA, Ronald Bruce Ronnie Shows (Betty) of Tucson, AZ; five granddaughters, Ava Conville-Parker, Dori Conville, Noel Philley, Cassandra Philley Henderson, Erin Philley Diez, and Blake Philley Wesley; along with eight great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; one great-great-grandson; and one great-great-granddaughter.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, January 13th, at Medders Funeral Home, 1564 Hwy 52 W, in Crossett with Dr. Jamie Staley, officiating, followed by an interment at Oak Grove Cemetery in Oak Grove, LA, under the direction of Medders Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 13th, at the funeral home, prior to the service. Pallbearers are Brian Lewis, Clay Lewis, Cole Diez, Bryan Wesley, Austin Wilcox, Nick Goodwin.
