Douglas "Poppy" Grubbs Obituary

Douglas Lamar “Poppy” Grubbs, 82, of Crossett, passed away on Saturday, November 16, 2019, at his home.  He was born in Monticello, AR on June 10, 1937, and was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

In 1955, he graduated from Drew Central High School, moved to Crossett, and began a twenty-year career as a pipefitter for Georgia Pacific.  Later, he and his wife, Mary Frances, ran a childcare business, where they lovingly cared for over one hundred children in their home.

Poppy was an outdoorsman and a member of the Barnett Hunting Club and former member of the Bluff Trails Hunting Club where he enjoyed deer hunting.  He also enjoyed duck, and quail hunting with his bird dogs, fishing, frog gigging, tinkering with tractors, and often attended live auctions around the area.

He would often stress the importance of having that special “get away” place, so he and his family made precious memories at their river camps, through the years, and the Drew County farm, where he could often be found working in the hay fields or tending to his cattle.

Poppy was outgoing, funny and loved to laugh and dance, but most importantly he loved to spend time with his grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Mary Grubbs Barnett; one brother, Michael Barnett; and one son-in-law, Buddy Stephens.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Mary Frances “Motzy” Grubbs of Crossett; one daughter, Judy Grubbs Stephens also of Crossett; one son, Todd Grubbs and wife, Tinetha, of Perryville, AR; one brother, Patrick Barnett of Monticello; one sister-in-law, Carolyn Barnett of Crossett; three granddaughters, Cherub Alford (Rollin) of Crossett, Tera Grubbs of Russelllville, AR, and Punky Thompson (Hunter) of Hamburg; one grandson, Trey Grubbs (Erin) also of Crossett; and three great-grandchildren, Magnolia “Maggie” Alford, Callan Alford, and Grady Grubbs.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 19th at Medders Funeral Home Chapel, 1564 Hwy 52 W, in Crossett with Bro. Jason Cater and Bro. Tim Williams, officiating, followed by interment at Ozment Valley Cemetery.  Pallbearers are David Wylie, Darren Eubanks, Hershell Loveless, Ronnie Rodgers, Barry Barnett, and Zach Swaim.  Honorary pallbearers are Terry Upshaw, J.
