Herman Owens Obituary

Herman Lee Owens, 91, of Crossett, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2024, at Hospice Home Care in Little Rock. He was born in Crossett on December 24, 1932, to Chester Arthur Owens and Richie Mae Barnett Owens.

Herman lived his early years on Main Street in Crossett where the First Baptist Church now stands. He played in the creek behind the church and remembers when Main Street was still a dirt road. He had fond memories of being a Boy Scout and meeting in the old caboose at Lucas Pond.

Herman graduated from Crossett High School in 1950. After graduation he attended Georgia Tech University and swam on the Yellow Jacket swim team. Upon returning to Crossett, he began his 45 year career with the Crossett Lumber Company then Georgia Pacific Paper Operations.  He worked as an electrician and foreman then superintendent in the Electrical and Instrumentation Department.

He first spotted the love of his life, Patsy Rose (Pat) Combs Owens, at the stop light as she went home for lunch from the Bemis Bag Company and he left the paper mill. They married at Temple Baptist Church in Crossett on February 24, 1956, and celebrated 64 years of marriage together.

Herman was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in February of 2000. He endured a bone marrow transplant and various chemotherapies throughout his 24 year battle. With the care of his wife and the UAMS Cancer Center, he was a warrior and champion of this disease leading a full life many years after his diagnosis.

Herman was a life long member of First Baptist Church and a Mason. He loved duck hunting at Overflow and Felsenthal and fishing at Lake Chicot and the Ouachita River. Upon retirement, he and his wife operated the Trieschmann House Bed and Breakfast.

Herman is survived by his children, Rick Owens and wife, Cheryl, of Crossett. Rusty Owens and wife Dana, of Lake Charles, LA and Misty Huerkamp and husband, Deron, of Arkadelphia. He was G-Daddy to his grandchildren, Carson Owens, Dalton, Brock and Sumner Huerkamp and bonus grandchildren Taylor Scott, Whitney Wilcox, Britney Person and Blake Cooper.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, one sister, Odelle Owens Johnson and one brother, Arthur Richard Owens.
