James "Barney" Stivers Obituary

James Harold “Barney” Stivers, 80, of Crossett, passed away on Friday, March 3, 2023, at the Ashley County Medical Center surrounded by family. He was born in Albany, New York on April 25, 1942, to his parents, Harold and Helen LePoint Stivers.

Barney worked for many years at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department prior to becoming an investment banker, and eventually retired at the age of 73.  He was a member of the Lion’s Club International and he enjoyed playing golf and fishing.

Barney was quick-witted and loved to aggravate, tease, and have fun with family and friends.  He and his brothers are all back together again, and his family is left wondering “who is going to get hurt first?”

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers: John Stivers and his wife Sonja and Joseph Stivers.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of sixty years, Nora Stivers; two daughters, Cathy Stivers Smith of Crossett and April Stivers Bailey (Jim) of Cabot; one sister, Judy Stivers of Memphis TN, one brother in law, James Malcolm Smith of Mason, TN and one sister-in law, Rose Mary Patterson of Bartlett, TN; three grandchildren, Dr. Hunter Smith (Shelby) of Crossett, Cody Bailey and his fiancé (Sarah Stanley) of Jonesboro, AR,, and Sydney Bailey (Kenny Pederson) of Cabot, AR; one great grandchild, Rylee Grace Pederson and many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, March 9, at Memphis Memory Gardens, 6444 Raleigh Lagrange Rd in Memphis, Tennessee, with Dr. Hunter Smith, officiating.  Pallbearers are Dr. Hunter Smith, Jim Bailey, Cody Bailey, Tony Kolvek, John David Stivers and Randy Patterson.
