Joe Martin Stevens, 67, of Crossett, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2020. He was born on February 4, 1953, to Martin and Lenore Stevens. He worked as a Heavy Lift Specialist on projects in countries around the world, including Australia, South Africa, and Canada, among many others. This was his profession by trade, but his family often claimed he was a spy ironically, because he was a man who stood apart from most, and he was always known to carry a briefcase, even though it was packed with coloring books, crayons, etc. to give to less fortunate children on his travels.
Joe grew up in Herald, IL, was a graduate of Carmi High School, received his Associate’s Degree, and eventually retired from CB&I. He was saved and baptized as a teenager and continued to serve the Lord with a passion for volunteering at the church. He dearly loved South Crossett Missionary Baptist Church and her pastors and often spent his free time mowing the churchyard, tending to the sign, or making sure things were in place for events.
Joe was a warm-hearted man with a unique sense of humor who always supported others with his generosity and willingness to help them whenever needed.
He often enjoyed fishing, playing golf, and doing yard work. He had a love for dogs and cats and especially children, but most of all, he adored his family and enjoyed nothing more than spending time with them and reading books to his grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Martin Daniel Stevens and Dorothy Lenore Martin Stevens, along with two brothers, Jack, and Jeff Stevens.
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Terri Maxwell Stevens of Crossett; three daughters, Adrien Stevens Welsh (Lucas) of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, Haylee Stevens Pepper (fiancé’ Conrad Clark) of Crossett, and Savannah Stevens of Bossier City, LA; four grandchildren, Justice and Kamille Welsh and Charlie and Hazel Pepper; his father-in-law, Alan Maxwell (Glenda) of Crossett; two sisters-in-law, Janet Stevens of Harrisburg, IL, and Loretta Stevens of St. Louis, MO; two brothers-in-law, Glenn Maxwell (Kathy) of Crossett, and Keith Maxwell (Paula) of Winnsboro, LA; along with; one niece, Natalie Stevens; three nephews, Tom, David, and Robert Stevens; and a host of friends.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 6, at the South Crossett Missionary Baptist Church, 2201 S. Main St., Crossett with Pastors Barry Carter and Don Justice, officiating, followed by interment at Antioch Cemetery under the direction of Medders Funeral Home.
A “Come and Go” Visitation will be from 3:00-7:00 p.m., Sunday, July 5, at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the South Crossett Missionary Baptist Church to establish a Children’s Library at the church in his memory.
Medders Funeral Home is complying with the Arkansas Department of Health guidelines and limiting indoor funerals and visitations according to the Arkansas Govenor's mandates. All attendees must provide and wear a face mask upon entering and comply with social distancing and sanitizing guidelines.
