Martha Pennington Obituary

Martha Montgomery Pennington, daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, went home to her Lord and Savior on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at the age of 79 after a battle with cancer.  Martha was born in Beekman, LA in 1944 to Rosco and Elsie Montgomery, the middle of 5 siblings.  She attended Beekman Elementary and Bastrop High School, where she graduated in 1962.  She worked various jobs until working for Dr. Ted Pollard, where she remained until she met the love of her life, Lurrell Pennington.  They married in 1965 and moved to Crossett, where she remained until her death.

She worked at Leisure Lodge nursing home, where she attained her certification as a diet manager and food protection professional.  She later became manager of food service for the Crossett School District, until she retired in 2006.  Martha, also lovingly known as Granny or Aunt Mott, loved spending time with her family, children, and grandchildren.  When her kids were little, many weekends were spent camping and fishing at Lake Chicot.  She enjoyed traveling and continued to fish as often as she could.  She loved her family at South Main Baptist Church.  She served her church family as a greeter and was involved in various other church committees.  She remained active in her church until her passing.

She is survived by 2 sons, Jamey and wife Julie of Tifton, GA; Scott and wife Milissa of Crossett; daughter Phyllis Kovar of Lufkin, TX; 13 grandchildren, 30+ great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren; 3 brothers Buddy, Gene, and Terry Montgomery.

She is preceded in death by her parents Rosco and Elsie Montgomery, father and mother-in-law Coy Ed and Louise Pennington, husband Lurrell Pennington, infant son, sister Ida Gentry, son-in-law Charles Kovar, 2 brothers-in-law Butch and Charles Pennington and sister-in-law Pam Montgomery.

Visiting hours are Tuesday, March 5th between 5:00-7:00 pm at South Main Baptist Church.  The funeral service will be held at South Main Baptist Church on Wednesday, March 6th at 1:00 pm.  Pallbearers will be Mike Pennington, Craig Pennington, Shane Montgomery, Benji Price, Chris Leonard and Jeff Harrison.  Honorary pallbearers are Dakotah Pennington, Colin Pennington, Chad Kovar, Jonathan Kovar, Taylor Kovar, David Kovar, Kevin Kovar, Kyle Kovar, Scott Pullin and Cheyene Williamson.

The family would like to thank all her caregivers, especially Hope at Home and Hospice Home Care in Monticello.  In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to Hope at Home.

Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourself, [it is] the gift of God.  Following a sermon on this verse, Martha was saved and baptized.
