Obituary

Merldean Hooks, 87, of Crossett, Arkansas, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on June 25, 2023.  He was born and raised in Banks, Arkansas, and was a member of Beulahland Assembly of God Church.

Merldean spent most of his career at Georgia Pacific, dedicating over three decades of service where his coworkers nicknamed him “Squirrel” for his playful and mischievous personality.  He also drove a school bus for several years, becoming a beloved figure among the children who called him “the Fonz” for his cool demeanor and ability to bring laughter to their daily commutes. And lastly, he was the beloved maintenance man for the Heritage Manor Residential Complex, where he worked until his retirement.

Along with his jovial nature, Merldean was known for his cornbread, and his fried eggs, which were favorites of his grandchildren and always helped to bring his most beloved people around the dinner table.  He was kind-hearted, generous, and especially humble.  A man who went out of his way to help those in need. Whether it was lending a listening ear or offering a helping hand.

He was also an outdoors enthusiast.  Whether it was deer hunting, squirrel hunting, tinkering with old cars and lawn mowers, or casting bait into the water, he was happy.

Merldean was a smiling, horn blowing, family man who loved life, and especially his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Ruth Dailey Hooks; four sisters, his infant twin, Shirlene Hooks, Patsy Loomis, Lois Green, and Marilyn Pitts; and three brothers, Bill Edward, Russell, and Louis Hooks.

He leaves behind his wife of fifty-seven years, Betty McDaniel Hooks; and one daughter, Janet Lansdale both of Crossett; and one son, who will forever be alive in everyone’s hearts, Christopher Hooks; along with three sisters, Merline Knight of Fordyce, AR, Morris Jefferys (Billy Faye) of Hermitage, AR, and Peggy Morgan (Benny) of Camden, AR; three brothers, Joe Frank Hooks of Smackover, AR, Cecil Hooks of White Oak, AR, and Marion Hooks (Connie) of Chidester, AR; three grandchildren, Devin and Payton Lansdale, and Chancin Hooks (Hailey); and three great-grandchildren, Brylan and Bristen Bankston, and Oaklee Hooks.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 28th, at the Beulahland Assembly of God Church, 1401 Hancock Rd, in Crossett, with Pastors Steve McMellon and Ricky Tyler officiating followed by interment at Crossroads Cemetery under the direction of Medders Funeral Home.  Pallbearers are Tony Hooks, Andy Hooks, Stacey Chandler, Coy Chandler, and Bruce Green.

Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 27th at Medders Funeral Home, 1564 Hwy 52 W, in Crossett.
