Shirley Louise Matthews, 72, of Crossett, passed away on August 26, 2024. She was born in Maud, TX, on October 10, 1951, and spent most of her life in Shreveport, Louisiana, where she cultivated her unique blend of humor, warmth, and feistiness.
Shirley was a firecracker in the best sense, never afraid to speak her mind or stand up for what she believed in. She was known for her comical nature and her incredible ability to make those around her laugh. Her fried chicken was legendary, a family favorite that will be remembered and cherished at every gathering.
A lover of simple pleasures, Shirley enjoyed watching Jimmy Swaggart preach, indulging in her soap operas, listening to Elvis, and tuning in to CMT. She also had a passion for garage sales, always on the lookout for the next treasure to add to her beloved collection of porcelain dolls.
Shirley also had a special love for animals which was evident in the way she cared for her dogs, who were more like family to her. But above all, her greatest joy and source of pride were her children, grandchildren, and extended family.
She is preceded in death by her father, Hugh Black; her mother, Irene Black Cummings; one granddaughter, Lisa Walker; two brothers, Eddie Black, and Danny Black; and one sister, Judy Allen.
She leaves behind one son, Edwin Walker; and one daughter, Melinda Nicholson (Terry) both of Ashland, TN; four sisters, Hughlene Rice of Crossett, Susan Black of Bossier City, LA, Jan Henderson of Shreveport, LA; and Glenda Quint (Bernie) of Haughton, LA; along with one brother, Larry Black (Wandza) of Crossett; one sister in-law, Debbie Black of Shreveport, LA; five grandchildren, Michael Edward Walker (Stephanie), Crystal Dabney, Brandon Upchurch (Elizabeth), James Upchurch (Brittany), and Samantha Nicholson; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
To Hughlene, Edwin and Melinda would like to express much gratitude and love for taking care of their mother in her last days, it will never be forgotten.
Care entrusted to Medders Funeral Home of Crossett.
