Vera Gatling Obituary

Vera Ruth Gatling, 84, of Crossett, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 31, 2021.  She was born on January 1, 1937, to her parents, Charlie and Manie Rhodes Upshaw, was a resident of Crossett for the past fifty-five years, and a devoted member of Pine Forest Missionary Baptist Church.

Vera retired as a small bag inspector from Bemis Bag Company and later worked for “Meals on Wheels,” delivering delicious meals to those in need.  Vera loved to cook and often baked cakes, pies, and made delicious banana pudding.  She had a giver’s heart and randomly took goodies to people all over town, just to brighten someone’s day.

She loved people, loved to laugh, and especially enjoyed being with her friends and family.  She was a fabulous “Mamaw,” who had an endless supply of gum and hugs for the grands who she loved immensely.

She is preceded in death by her parents and eight siblings, Grace Gardner, Hardie Upshaw, Mildred Hall, Sykes Upshaw, Harold Upshaw, Huey Upshaw, David Upshaw, and Fannie Mae Boyd Denny.

She leaves behind three daughters, Brenda Rice and husband, David, of Crossett, Becky Marter also of Crossett, and Christy Martin and husband, Brian, of Hamburg; five grandchildren, Larry Rice, Michelle Griffin, Jonothan Murphy, Benjiman Murphy, and Roxanne Marter Nubles; and eleven great-grandchildren, Austin Williams, Jack Rice, Juliana Rice, Belle Griffin, Hailey Murphy, Spencer Murphy, Camryn Murphy, Lakin Nubles, Brody Lowery, Sunnie Johnson, and Sadie Johnson; along with two great-great-grandchildren, Fynlee and Koley Williams; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Due to the recent increase in Covid-19 cases in our area, the family will have a private graveside service at Crossroads Cemetery, with Pastor Mike Griffith officiating.  Pallbearers are Larry Rice, Jack Rice, David Rice, Benjiman Murphy, Brian Martin, and Lance Griffin.  Honorary pallbearer, Austin Williams.
